長い引用になったが、この長さがこの台詞のいのちなのでどうかご辛抱頂きたい。クローディアスは先王を殺害して王位に上り先王の后と結婚した。強引な遣り口だ。長々しくしゃべりまくり、聴き手をけむに巻こうとする魂胆がここに隠されている。王の死による国民の動揺を鎮めようと一見理論的な計らいをしているようだが、その冷静な理論の裏には地位と色への欲望が煮えたぎっている。その熱を隠すために修辞で固めた異様に長い文章をしゃべりつづる。

オクシモロンのオンパレードだ。これこそがクローディアスの（そして、シェイクスピアの）老獪さといえる。赤字の完了形に注目！(Have we. . . Taken to wife.)
この間に不自然に押し込まれた２９語が、妻を迎える後ろめたさを隠そうとする現王の隠れもないたくらみだ。この台詞は王位就任の演説としても、王位簒奪者の告白としても、興味深い台詞だ。悪の華とでもいうべき「美しい醜さ」を楽しもうではないか。
